Abstract

Land use continues to decline by 28%, especially in the agricultural and plantation business sectors, so other alternatives are needed to continue developing agricultural production and maintaining the sustainability of agricultural land, one of which is using a greenhouse. Along with the development of technology, greenhouses are now equipped with various sophisticated features, such as automation systems and environmental sensors, which aim to increase effectiveness and efficiency in agricultural activities. Both smart greenhouses and conventional greenhouses have their own advantages and disadvantages in supporting plant productivity. Therefore, this study aims to determine the comparison of the effectiveness of smart greenhouses and conventional greenhouses on the growth of pak choy and caisim mustard plants. The research methods used include the design and implementation of prototypes, software, and electronic devices connected to the IoT system. DHT11, Capacitive Soil Moisture, and LDR sensors are used which are connected to ESP32 and use Arduino IoT Cloud as an IoT device. The results of the study showed that smart greenhouses are more effective than conventional greenhouses in supporting the growth of pak choy and caisim mustard plants. Pak choy plants experienced an increase in height of 10.53% and leaf width of 5.56%, while mustard greens experienced a more significant increase, namely 62.5% in height, 16.67% in leaf width, and 50% in number of leaves. These data show that more stable environmental control in smart greenhouses supports optimal plant growth.
