Abstract

Corrosion occurs due to an electrochemical reaction between metal and the environment, which leads to a decrease in the quality of the metal, such as increased brittleness, roughness, and susceptibility to damage. Factors such as steam, water, acid, salt, and high environmental temperatures play a role in triggering metal corrosion, where if corrosion is not controlled and taken seriously it will cause fatal damage to metal structures, especially in gas distribution pipelines made of steel. Corrosion cannot be prevented or stopped altogether, but it can be controlled or at least inhibited the rate of corrosion. In this final project will use the cathodic protection method, namely by making the metal structure a protected cathode, there are two types of cathodic protection methods, namely the forced current method that flows current to the object to be protected and the sacrificial anode method is to sacrifice material with a higher potential. In this final project will compare the two protection methods from a technical and economic perspective, to find out which method is most appropriate to use on the API 5L Grade B pipe used to distribute gas owned by PT. Petrogas Jatim Utama with a length of 195m and a diameter of 6 inches. The protection system chosen is sacrificial anode cathodic protection using 2 magnesium anodes with a total weight of 43 kg which will protect the structure for more than 20 years, with the planned needs including design costs, material purchase costs, installation costs, system testing costs, and maintenance costs which cost 59,051,000.
