Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate low-dose pediatric head CT protocols at a tube voltage of 80 kVp using both manual and Automatic Tube Current Modulation (ATCM) approaches, with the goal of minimizing radiation exposure while maintaining diagnostic image quality. Five scanning protocols were tested using a custom-designed anthropomorphic pediatric head fantom, and organ doses were measured using Gafchromic LD-V1 dosimetry films. Image quality was quantitatively assessed using Contrast-to-Noise Ratio (CNR), Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), and Noise Power Spectrum (NPS). The results showed that gradual reduction of tube current significantly decreased CTDIvol by up to 72.99% (from 22.03 mGy in P1 to 5.95 mGy in P4), although at the cost of image quality degradation. While ATCM achieved adaptive radiation control, it showed higher localized doses in certain organs. Among the tested protocols, Protocol P3 (80 kVp, 175 mA) was identified as the most optimal, offering more than 50% dose reduction with image quality that remained within acceptable diagnostic standards. These findings support the implementation of safer and more efficient CT protocols for pediatric head imaging.
