Abstract

Tingkat partisipasi masyarakat Jawa terhadap seni pertunjukan masih tergolong rendah, padahal seni pertunjukan merupakan bagian penting dari pelestarian budaya Indonesia. Gedung Pertunjukan Balai Budaya Surabaya (GPBBS), sebagai salah satu fasilitas seni dan budaya kota Surabaya, memiliki potensi besar dalam meningkatkan minat masyarakat terhadap seni pertunjukan, namun masih menghadapi permasalahan pada aspek kenyamanan audial dan visual. Perancangan ini bertujuan untuk merancang ulang interior GPBBS dengan fokus pada optimalisasi akustika ruang berkarakter hibrida dan pendekatan desain kontekstual agar dapat meningkatkan kenyamanan pengunjung. Penelitian menggunakan metode design thinking yang disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan perancangan, dimana dilakukan simulasi akustik menggunakan software Treble. Analisis lapangan menunjukkan bahwa kondisi eksisting GPBBS belum mendukung pengalaman teatrikal secara optimal, khususnya dalam fungsi akustik multifungsi untuk musik dan pidato. Perancangan desain mengintegrasikan sistem akustik fleksibel seperti AQFlex Adjustable Acoustic System hingga heavy drapery yang dikombinasikan dengan elemen visual bernuansa kebudayaan lokal Surabaya dituangkan dalam narasi desain bertema “SASMITA”. Hasil akhir desain yang divalidasi melalui simulasi akustik menunjukkan perbaikan signifikan terhadap GPBBS, dari segi kenyamanan audial terjadi peningkatan kualitas akustik, dimana aspek akustik fungsi hibrida yang belum dipenuhi oleh eksisting dioptimasi sehingga menghasilkan dua konfigurasi ruang, yakni konfigurasi ruang musikal yang memiliki acoustical intimacy baik dengan RT sebesar 1.48 detik dan konfigurasi speech hall yang memiliki kualitas speech intelligibility baik dengan RT sebesar 1.21 detik. Hasil desain tidak hanya menunjukkan kualitas akustik fungsi hibrida yang lebih optimal, namun juga memberi kenyamanan visual dan kualitas pengalaman teatrikal pengunjung yang divalidasi melalui kuesioner validasi. Dengan demikian, perancangan ini tidak hanya memberikan solusi terhadap permasalahan yang ada pada GPBBS, tetapi juga menjadi upaya strategis dalam mendukung pelestarian budaya melalui peningkatan pengalaman dalam menikmati seni pertunjukan.

The level of community participation in performing arts across Java remains relatively low, despite the crucial role that performing arts play in the preservation of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. The Balai Budaya Surabaya Performing Arts Hall (GPBBS), as one of the city’s key cultural and artistic facilities, holds significant potential to foster public interest in performing arts. However, the venue still faces challenges in providing adequate auditory and visual comfort. This research aims to redesign the interior of GPBBS by focusing on the optimization of hybrid-character spatial acoustics and the application of contextual design approaches to enhance visitor comfort. The study employs a design thinking methodology tailored to the project’s design requirements, including acoustic simulations conducted using Treble software. Field analysis revealed that the current condition of GPBBS does not sufficiently support an optimal theatrical experience, particularly in accommodating the hybrid acoustic needs for both musical and speech-based performances. The proposed design integrates flexible acoustic systems such as the AQFlex Adjustable Acoustic System and heavy drapery, combined with visual elements inspired by Surabaya’s local cultural identity, which are embodied in a design narrative titled “SASMITA.” The final design, validated through acoustic simulations, demonstrates significant improvements in auditory comfort. Specifically, the redesign achieved optimal hybrid acoustic performance by producing two spatial configurations: a musical hall configuration with excellent acoustical intimacy (RT = 1.48 seconds) and a speech hall configuration with high speech intelligibility (RT = 1.21 seconds). In addition to enhanced acoustic quality, the redesign also offers improved visual comfort and an enriched theatrical experience, as validated through user feedback questionnaires. This study not only addresses the existing deficiencies of GPBBS but also represents a strategic contribution to cultural preservation by enhancing the public’s engagement with performing arts.
