Abstract

Pendidikan inklusif bagi siswa tunanetra di Indonesia masih menghadapi berbagai tantangan, terutama dalam penyediaan fasilitas interior yang adaptif dan fungsional. SMPLB-A YPAB Surabaya merupakan salah satu institusi pendidikan yang melayani siswa tunanetra, namun kondisi eksisting menunjukkan bahwa interior sekolah belum sepenuhnya mendukung kebutuhan khusus siswa dalam hal orientasi ruang, navigasi mandiri, dan kualitas lingkungan belajar. Penelitian ini berfokus pada redesain interior SMPLB-A YPAB Surabaya sebagai respons terhadap keterbatasan tersebut. Isu utama yang diangkat adalah rendahnya tingkat kemandirian siswa akibat minimnya elemen desain yang mendukung identifikasi ruang secara multisensori dan sirkulasi udara yang layak.
Proses perancangan dilakukan dengan metode desain berbasis prinsip universal dan multisensori, melalui tahapan studi literatur, observasi langsung, wawancara dengan pengguna, serta analisis spasial. Fokus utama desain diarahkan pada tiga ruang vital, yaitu ruang perpustakaan, kelas 9, dan ruang musik yang memiliki peran penting dalam aktivitas belajar dan ekspresi diri siswa tunanetra. Strategi desain yang diterapkan mencakup elemen kontras visual tinggi, jalur navigasi berbasis sentuhan dan suara, serta sistem penghawaan alami untuk menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang aman dan nyaman.
Konsep akhir dari desain ini bertujuan untuk menciptakan ruang pendidikan yang inklusif dan mampu meningkatkan kemandirian siswa dalam menjalani aktivitas sehari-hari secara mandiri. Penelitian ini diharapkan menjadi acuan dalam pengembangan fasilitas pendidikan inklusif di Indonesia yang tidak hanya fungsional, tetapi juga memberikan dampak positif terhadap kualitas hidup dan pengalaman belajar siswa tunanetra.

Inclusive education for visually impaired students in Indonesia continues to face various challenges, particularly in providing interior facilities that are adaptive and functional. SMPLB-A YPAB Surabaya is one of the educational institutions serving students with visual impairments; however, existing conditions show that its interior spaces do not fully support the specific needs of these students in terms of spatial orientation, independent navigation, and the quality of the learning environment. This research focuses on the interior redesign of SMPLB-A YPAB Surabaya as a response to these limitations. The main issue addressed is the students’ limited independence due to the lack of design elements that support multisensory spatial recognition and adequate air circulation.
The design process adopts a universal and multisensory design approach, involving literature studies, direct observations, user interviews, and spatial analysis. The design focuses on three essential areas—namely the library, Grade 9 classroom, and music room—which play a significant role in the students’ learning activities and self-expression. The applied design strategies include high visual contrast, multisensory-based navigation paths (touch and sound), and natural ventilation systems to create a safe and comfortable learning environment.
The final design concept aims to establish an inclusive educational space that enhances students’ independence in carrying out daily activities autonomously. This research is expected to serve as a reference for the development of other inclusive educational facilities in Indonesia that are not only functional but also significantly improve the quality of life and learning experiences of visually impaired students.
