Abstract

The separation of acetic acid from crude cannot be carried out optimally using simple distillation due to the low relative volatility and the close boiling points of the components.
Therefore, extractive distillation becomes a more effective method with the aid of entrainers to enhance the separation efficiency. Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) such as choline chloride
diethylene glycol 1:3 (CC-DEG 1:3), choline chloride–triethylene glycol 1:3 (CC-TEG 1:3), as
well as ionic liquids [EMIM]BF₄ and [EMIM]ESO₄ were used in this study due to their good
interactions with acetic acid and water, and their superiority as green solvents. This final project includes the measurement of Vapour–Liquid Equilibrium (VLE) data for the binary system of acetic acid + water and the ternary system of water + acetic acid + entrainer ([EMIM]BF₄,
[EMIM]ESO₄, CC-DEG 1:3, and CC-TEG 1:3) at atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa) using a validated ebulliometer.
