Abstract

This study aims to identify the relationship between community preferences in selecting Junior High Schools (SMP) and socioeconomic conditions toward the phenomenon of spatial mismatch in Tenggilis Mejoyo District, Surabaya City. Although this district is adequately equipped with educational infrastructure, a discrepancy was found between the number of school-aged residents and actual student enrollment, indicating a spatial mismatch. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining primary data collected through questionnaires and observations from 126 respondents with descriptive analysis and cross-tabulation methods.
The findings reveal that spatial mismatch is multidimensional and strongly influenced by various socioeconomic characteristics, such as age, parental education level, employment status, monthly income, and ownership of private vehicles and housing. Approximately 30.5% of respondents experienced major mismatch (choosing schools outside the district), while 17.6% experienced minor mismatch (choosing schools not geographically closest), driven by factors such as school quality, reputation, comfort, and limitations in zonation selection. Most students travel ≥2 km with commuting times of up to 40 minutes, deviating from the ideal planning standards. Furthermore, 68.3% of respondents stated that public transportation costs significantly affect their household finances. These findings emphasize that zoning policies have not yet fully achieved their goals and require more adaptive approaches that consider accessibility and community preferences comprehensively.
