Abstract

The global increase in greenhouse gas emissions has prompted the development of emission reduction policies, including in the maritime sector. One of the international regulations implemented is the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which aims to measure and improve the energy efficiency of existing ships. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing a solar cell system on a 1088 GT Ro-Ro passenger ferry as an effort to enhance the ship's EEXI value. The methods employed include literature review, collection of primary and secondary data, calculation of solar cell capacity and power based on the ship's layout, and analysis of EEXI values before and after system implementation. Based on the calculations, the solar cell system—consisting of 76 solar panels—was able to generate a peak daily output of 370.15 kW in September and a minimum of 161.76 kW in December. The energy produced was utilized to supply the ship’s electrical loads amounting to 40.9 kW. The implementation of this system resulted in an average EEXI reduction of 2.311%, with the highest reduction reaching 3.217% in September. These findings indicate that the application of a solar cell system has significant potential to support improvements in ship energy efficiency and to move toward compliance with global emission reduction standards.
