Abstract
komprehensif. Pada buku Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial untuk SD kelas V, sudah
tercantum materi tentang sistem pernapasan manusia, sehingga diharapkan materi edukasi
wilayah kerja Puskesmas Kedurus.
penyampaian pesan edukasi.
============================================================
Tuberculosis (TB) is an endemic disease in Indonesia and ranked second in the world in
terms of TB cases in 2023. In 2022, TB cases in children under 15 years old accounted for
15.3% of all TB cases in Indonesia, while in Surabaya, they reached 25.7% of all new TB
cases. Children aged 10–12 years, especially those with poor nutrition or exposed to
cigarette smoke, are at high risk of being infected and becoming ill with TB. Most of these
cases are adult-type TB (pulmonary TB), which is potentially contagious. Therefore, there
is a need for an educational medium that provides accurate information about TB
prevention and early detection, presented in a way that is engaging and easy for children to
understand. Various studies have shown that using educational comics in Natural Sciences
learning for 4th to 6th grade elementary students can increase learning motivation,
knowledge, attitudes, communication skills, and character development. In Indonesia, there
has not yet been a comprehensive TB educational comic. The Natural and Social Sciences
textbook for 5th grade already includes material on the human respiratory system, so TB
education content in the comic is expected to be understandable for children aged 10–12.
The methods used in this design include literature studies, in-depth interviews, and
experimental studies that form the basis of the comic design concept. The design was
evaluated by TB experts, public health professionals, and the Head of Kedurus Public
Health Center (Puskesmas). User testing was also conducted using questionnaires for
children aged 10–12 years or 4th–6th grade students at SDN Kedurus III and SDN
Warugunung I Surabaya, as the Kedurus Health Center's working area has a relatively high
number of TB cases.
The result of this design is an educational comic that uses a cultural approach set in
Surabaya, particularly around the Kedurus Health Center. The comic includes interactive
content such as quizzes, infographics about TB, and a leaflet on balanced nutrition, all
embedded within the comic. The comic carries the theme TB-conscious superheroes (TB
Busters), portrayed by 4th–6th grade students, and illustrates Indonesian daily life to make
the content more relatable and acceptable to the target readers. Pre-test and post-test results
showed that 14 out of 17 respondents experienced an increase in their knowledge about
TB. The average reading time for 4th–6th grade children was around 30 minutes to
complete 60–70 pages of the comic. The use of non-patronizing narrative writing,
appropriate character design, setting, and illustration style significantly contributed to
audience engagement and the effectiveness of educational message delivery.
