Abstract

Shipping goods by sea using containers is a crucial element in the global logistics chain, especially for sensitive commodities such as food, medicine, and chemicals. Containers serve to maintain the quality of the cargo and stabilize and precisely control the temperature of the goods, but the monitoring system, which is still manual and conventional, results in low efficiency, delayed detection of damage, and an increased risk of cargo loss. This study aims to design and implement a real-time Internet of Things (IoT)-based container condition monitoring and location tracking system. The system integrates hardware components such as an ESP32 microcontroller, Neo 6M GPS module, DS18B20 temperature sensor, flex sensor, and I2C LCD, along with software components including Firebase as the database and Android Studio for developing the application interface on Android devices. The system is capable of automatically sending temperature, position, and unit status data in real-time, thereby improving monitoring effectiveness and risk mitigation. Static testing results showed high accuracy with an average error of 0% for latitude and longitude, and 1.16% for temperature. In dynamic testing, the average error for the total variation of experiments was recorded at 0.03% for latitude, 0% for longitude, and 1.56% for temperature. Thus, the developed system can improve operational efficiency, ensure cargo quality, and provide added value in the global shipping industry competition.
