Abstract

Referring to Joshua Camaroff’s “Horror in Architecture,” this design reinterprets architecture as an emotional medium that violates formal conventions, using ambiguous boundaries, spatial disorientation, gloomy atmospheres, and a sense of entrapment to trigger existential reflection. The Ground Zero Memorial uses the history of the Trinity nuclear test, an unprecedented moment, as a profound spatial narrative to stop nuclear weapons forever. Horror films are one of Camaroff’s strong propositions in exploring monstrosity, deviance, and the uncanny, which are reflected in the built environment. Using the syntax of films, the design method deliberately created with cinematic horror in mind, according to the criteria of horror mapping, which draws inspiration from Trojan horses and subterranean architecture, particularly in the context of nuclear themes. The relationship between cinematic horror and horror in architecture seeks to deepen our understanding of how disturbing qualities manifest in physical space. The design result was seen through: (1) repeated mass buildup that creates an artificial hill that appears ambiguous as if it is sinking (2) a descending curved circulation that takes visitors through narrow crater corridors of varying heights (3) underground spaces covered with raw concrete and a layer of spots to depict decline; and (4) a gradual circulation with spatial impressions and information that begins from confrontation to reflective silence integrating the basic to complex structural flow. As a lasting reminder of nuclear violence, the Ground Zero Memorial commemorates the destruction of the past and also represents a firm stance towards the future, that nuclear weapons must be stopped before humanity destroys itself.
