Abstract

PT Bumi Suksesindo (PT BSI) is a mining company located in Banyuwangi, East Java, whose operations have the potential to alter landscape structure and degrade forest environments. Reclamation and revegetation efforts have been carried out to restore forest conditions, with success parameters assessed not only by vegetation cover but also by the recovery of faunal communities. Butterflies can serve as bioindicators to evaluate ecosystem health after mining activities. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and compare butterfly diversity across different vegetation types within the mining area of PT Bumi Suksesindo, specifically between Natural Forest (HA) and Reclamation Area (AR). Observations were conducted using the Pollardwalk method during April–May 2025. A total of 36 butterfly species from 5 families were identified across all observation sites, dominated by the families Nymphalidae and Pieridae. Butterfly diversity was generally higher in natural forests than in reclamation areas, indicated by a species richness of 30 species and an average Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H') of 2.195 in HA, compared to 17 species and an H' value of 1.863 in AR. The Morisita-Horn similarity index (CMH) showed that some reclamation sites had developed butterfly community structures similar to those of the natural forest. The highest similarity was observed between AR 3 and HA 2 with a value of 0.804, followed by other values above 0.7, indicating a relatively high degree of community similarity. These findings suggest that the reclamation process at PT Bumi Suksesindo has had a positive impact and is progressing effectively in restoring the ecological function of the habitat.
