Abstract

Rising mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—notably diabetes— underscores the need for more accessible health monitoring tools in Indonesia. This study proposes the conceptual design of a digital glucometer interoperable with a companion mobile application to support both self-monitoring and clinical follow-up. A design thinking approach guided the work across empathy, problem definition, ideation, prototyping, and early feedback cycles. Data were gathered through literature review, an online survey, and in-depth interviews with healthcare professionals, medical device partners/distributors, and individuals with a history of diabetes. Findings informed the development of Design Requirements & Objectives (DRO) that structured subsequent design decisions. The resulting concept features an ergonomic, compact, and intuitive glucometer paired with a dedicated portable pouch for organized storage of the device and its accessories. The app concept includes blood glucose logging, trend visualization, measurement reminders, and optional data sharing with healthcare providers. The proposed system is intended to simplify routine monitoring, encourage user engagement, and facilitate patient–provider collaboration. This work is at a conceptual and formative evaluation stage; further technical development and clinical validation are required before broader implementation.
