Abstract

Transprogramming is one of the methods offered by Bernard Tschumi in combining space and events, where different programs are combined into one design object, regardless of their function and spatial configuration incompatibility.
The church and traditional market are examples of two contrast programs, both in function and activities, and have intersected in the history of Christianity. The shift in worship activities to economic activities in the Temple of God made the meaning of the Temple itself shift at that time, causing conflicting relationship between those two programs.
This design tries to apply transprogramming to combine both functions and spatial configuration of a church and traditional market. With a mixed-use development approach, the design will accommodate programs that are integrated physically and functionally and create a reciprocate relationship.
The spatial hierarchy method applied will bring new programs out as a form of transition from the traditional market to the church, which will reduce the contrasting atmosphere between two programs. The differences in shape, size, and placement of the space of program will also produce hierarchy of importance of each function. The application of symbolic elements to the design will add sacred value to all the programs, as well as restore the cultural value that has long been lost from modern church buildings.
