Abstract

Microplastics are small plastic particles measuring around <5 mm that are difficult to decompose and degrade in the environment, thus they can contaminate aquatic ecosystems and can accumulate in the bodies of marine biota such as mollusks. Mollusks have a life cycle that can determine the level of pollutant accumulation in their bodies. This research aims to determine the abundance as well as the visual characteristics and chemical polymers of microplastics accumulated in the bodies of six species of mollusks, namely Nerita grossa, Nerita maxima, Nerita spengleriana, Nerita polita, Rhinoclavis sinensis, and Tylothais aculeata in the intertidal zone of Balekambang Beach, Malang Regency. Mollusk samples were collected using hand collecting methods, and a visual analysis of microplastics was conducted, including shape, size, color, and abundance in the six species of mollusks found. Polymer identification was performed using ATR-FTIR. The results showed that the dominant microplastic characters were fragments (90,86%), fiber (8,29%), film (0,85%), and beads (0,009%). The dominant size of microplastics in the range of 20-40 µm was 42,10%, with the colors found being black (66,55%), gray, blue, purple, yellow, orange, white, clear, green, brown, and red. The abundance of microplastics in T. aculeata showed the highest total number (140,13 individual particles-1), in N. grossa 116,80 individual particles-1, N. maxima 138,47 individual particles-1, N. spengleriana 119,13 individual particles-1, and N. polita 129,53 individual particles-1. While the lowest total was found in R. sinensis (116,27 individual particles-1). The types of microplastic polymers identified were polystyrene (PS) and nylon (polyamide). Differences in accumulation levels between species are thought to be related to feeding behavior and adaptation to habitat.
