Abstract

Kesederhanaan di dalam arsitektur sudah ada sejak era Arsitektur Modern dimana banyak arsitek pada masa itu mengimplementasikan serta mengedepankan aspek sederhana sebagai respon terhadap efisiensi material. Istilah Less is more banyak disebut pada era modern oleh arsitek Ludwig Mies van der Rohe dimana kesederhanaan digunakan untuk mencapai fungsi yang maksimal. Namun Robert Venturi melakukan penolakan dengan memperkenalkan istilah less is bore. Di dalam bukunya, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, ia memandang arsitektur seharusnya dapat menjadi karya yang memiliki kompleksitas pemaknaan di dalamnya. Pengalaman yang didapatkan pengguna juga akan lebih beragam ketika kompleksitas itu hadir. Venturi juga memandang arsitektur yang kompleks mempunyai kontradiksi. Kontradiksi ini menyebabkan pemaknaan terhadap arsitektur bisa menjadi lebih beragam. Di dalam perancangan tugas akhir ini kontradiksi ditampilkan dalam penggunaan bentuk yang saling bertolak belakang, serta permainan material dengan perbedaan tekstur yang dipadukan pada satu bidang. Penggunaan prinsip both-and juga menghasilkan pengalaman dualitas di dalamnya. Kontradiksi terlihat pada eksterior maupun interior bangunan dengan memainkan bentuk kotak dan lingkaran, vertikal dan diagonal, terbuka dan tertutup, serta variasi aktifitas dalam satu ruang.

Simplicity in architecture has existed since the Modern Architecture era, when many architects at that time implemented and prioritized simplicity as a response to material efficiency. The term “Less is more” was often used in the modern era by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, where simplicity was used to achieve maximum functionality. However, Robert Venturi rejected this by introducing the term “less is bore.” In his book, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, he argued that architecture should be a work with complexity of meaning within it. The experience gained by users will also be more diverse when complexity is present. Venturi also viewed complex architecture as having contradictions. These contradictions cause the meaning of architecture to become more diverse. In this final project design, contradictions are displayed through the use of contrasting forms and the interplay of materials with differing textures combined on a single surface. The application of the “both-and” principle also creates a sense of duality within the design. Contradictions are evident in both the exterior and interior of the building, through the use of box and circular forms, vertical and diagonal lines, open and closed spaces, and variations in activity within a single room.
