Abstract

Indonesia menempati peringkat ketiga dunia sebagai negara dengan jumlah spesies pohon terbanyak, dengan total 31.750 spesies tumbuhan yang telah teridentifikasi menurut data Statista pada tahun 2024. Salah satu spesies itu adalah pohon Surian (Toona sinensis Roem). Kayu Surian memiliki karakteristik yang dapat dimanfaatkan menjadi produk keseharian dikarenakan memiliki karakteristik yang berpotensial seperti bobot yang ringan, serat kayu yang indah, serta aroma alami menyerupai cedar. Berdasarkan data yang didapatkan peneliti kayu Surian, Doktor Yayat Hidayat, S.Hut., M.Si. Akan tetapi kayu Surian masih belum dipakai secara luas oleh masyarakat Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengenalkan kepada masyarakat mengenai kayu Surian melalui produk yang dapat diproduksi massal dengan mudah dan fungsional. Metode Material Driven Design (MDD) dilakukan untuk membantu pada eksplorasi potensi material kayu Surian. Metode Material Driven Design berpusat pada material untuk menuntun proses perancangan produk. Kayu Surian termasuk ke dalam jenis kayu yang digunakan untuk memproduksi produk-produk seperti tableware, dinnerware dan masih banyak lagi. Produk Amenities Tray adalah salah satu produk yang dapat memuat keunggulan-keunggulan kayu Surian yang kemudian dikenalkan kepada masyarakat melalui salah satu pasar B2B yakni Industri perhotelan serta sebagai cara untuk mendukung kinerja Industri Mikro dan kecil untuk membuka peluang eksplorasi produk baru menggunakan Kayu Surian.

Indonesia ranks third in the world as the country with the largest number of tree species, with a total of 31,750 plant species identified according to Statista data in 2024. One of these species is the Surian tree (Toona sinensis Roem). Surian wood has characteristics that can be used for everyday products because it has potential characteristics such as light weight, beautiful wood grain, and a natural aroma similar to cedar. Based on data obtained by Surian wood researcher, Doctor Yayat Hidayat, S.Hut., M.Si. However, Surian wood is still not widely used by the Indonesian people. This research aims to introduce the public to Surian wood through products that can be mass-produced easily and functionally. The Material Driven Design (MDD) method was carried out to help explore the potential of Surian wood material. The Material Driven Design method focuses on materials to guide the product design process. Surian wood is included in the type of wood used to produce products such as tableware, dinnerware and many more. The Amenities Tray product is one of the products that can contain the advantages of Surian wood which is then introduced to the public through one of the B2B markets, namely the hotel industry and as a way to support the performance of Micro and small industries to open up opportunities for exploring new products using Surian wood.
