Abstract

Saat ini di Indonesia banyak terdapat pengembangan kampung kota menjadi kampung wisata. Masyarakat yang tadinya hanya bermukim di kampung tersebut perlu menyesuaikan diri terhadap kampung yang memiliki identitas baru termasuk hubungan mereka dengan kampungnya. Apabila tidak ada rasa keterikatan tempat, risiko pengabaian terhadap keberadaan kampungnya dapat terjadi. Sense of place merupakan hubungan manusia dengan tempat yang memiliki tingkatan. Oleh karena penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peran sense of place yang dapat mendukung eksistensi kampung wisata sebagai bentuk permukiman perlu dipertahankan.
Lokasi penelitian berada di Surabaya yang memiliki 107 kampung destinasi wisata. Kampung Ketandan menjadi lokasi studi karena eksistensinya sebagai kampung asli Surabaya yang telah lama berdiri di tengah kawasan segi empat Tunjungan Perkotaan Surabaya dan menjadi destinasi wisata. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran kuantitatif dan kualitatif dengan taktik penelitian observasi, kuesioner dan in depth interview dengan responden masyarakat kampung untuk memperjelas element of place yang dapat membentuk sense of place dan tingkatannya yang dapat mendukung eksistensi kampung wisata.
Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa element of place melalui form, activity dan meaning dapat berperan dalam membentuk attachment to a place masyarakat. Berdasarkan level tersebut, masyarakat memilih untuk memodifikasi lingkungan mereka dalam rangka menjaga eksistensi kampung mereka sebagai kampung wisata. Oleh karena itu penelitian ini bermanfaat dalam pengembangan pengetahuan terkait sense of place pada tingkatan attachment to a place dapat mendukung eksistensi suatu kampung wisata, dan dapat memberikan referensi untuk memahami “readiness criteria” dalam menetapkan sebuah kampung menjadi kampung wisata.

In Indonesia, the development of urban kampung into kampung wisata (tourism kampung) has become increasingly common. This transformation requires local communities to adapt to their kampung’s new identity, including how they relate to the place they live in. Without a strong sense of place, there is a risk of neglecting the kampung’s existence. Sense of place refers to the relationship between people and place, which consists of varying levels of attachment. This study aims to understand the role of sense of place in supporting the existence of tourism kampung as a form of settlement that needs to be preserved.
The study is located in Kampung Ketandan, Surabaya—an original kampung that has long stood in the midst of the strategic Tunjungan urban quadrangle and has now become a tourism destination. Surabaya itself has 107 kampung designated as tourist destinations, making it a significant context for this research. The study uses a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods through observation, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews with kampung residents. The goal is to identify the elements that shape sense of place—namely form, activity, and meaning—as well as to understand the levels of residents’ attachment to their kampung.
Findings reveal that these elements play a significant role in forming residents’ attachment to a place. Based on the levels of attachment, residents actively choose to modify their environment in order to maintain the existence of their kampung as a tourism kampung. This research contributes to the development of knowledge regarding sense of place, particularly the level of attachment to a place that can support the sustainability of kampung wisata. Moreover, it provides a reference for understanding “readiness criteria” in determining whether a kampung is suitable to be developed into a tourism kampung.
