Abstract
The implementation of the Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) is a critical response to international regulations aimed at preventing the spread of invasive marine species. This study analyzes the effectiveness of BWTS on tanker ships and its impact on operational efficiency, particularly in terms of energy consumption, operation time, and maintenance costs. By evaluating data from a tanker vessel equipped with BWTS, this research quantifies the additional energy usage, changes in operational duration, and the increase in maintenance expenses due to the system’s complexity. Results show that while BWTS ensures compliance
with the IMO D-2 standard, it also introduces higher energy demands and more frequent maintenance requirements. Despite these challenges, the system offers long-term
environmental benefits and operational legitimacy in global waters. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation to aid ship operators in understanding the trade-offs between
regulatory compliance and operational performance.
