Abstract

The rapid growth of the global industry has significantly increased plastic production, with approximately 4.8–12.7 million tons of plastic ending up as waste in the ocean each year. This waste degrades into microplastics (MPs), posing a serious threat to ecosystems. One type of MP, polystyrene (PS-MPs), has a size of less than 5 mm and can accumulate in aquatic organisms (such as fish), thereby also affecting humans through contamination of the food chain. Thus, practical and efficient solutions are needed to minimize the harmful impacts of PS-MPs.In this Final Project research, a composite-based adsorbent of Activated Hydrochar/Zeolite-A (AHC-Z) was developed, and the effect of its composition ratio on the adsorption efficiency of PS-NH₂ type MPs was evaluated.
