Abstract

This study develops a model of sense of place levels in the context of low-cost vertical housing, specifically in rental apartments (rusunawa) in Indonesia. Sense of place is a subjective perception of the environment through experience and emotion, influenced by three main aspects: form (physical), activity, and meaning. As a psychosocial construct, sense of place theory has gradually evolved along with the intensity of a person's involvement with a place, underlying the hierarchy of sense of place levels. Furthermore, this hierarchy demonstrates associations between place identity, place attachment, and place dependence with demographic and cultural factors. Research on sense of place has been developed for urban, tourism, and cultural heritage contexts, but studies of this concept at the meso-scale, particularly in low-cost vertical housing, remain limited. This study tests the hypothesis of a sense of place hierarchy influenced by various environmental, demographic, and cultural factors in the context of low-cost vertical rental housing. This study employs an intersubjective paradigm and a mixed-methods strategy, with correlational research predominating. The correlational research analysis used Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to examine the relationships between all aspects and the hierarchical levels of sense of place. Qualitative research was used as a validation technique through in-depth interviews, observations, and place-centered mapping to capture activity patterns and residents' narratives. The results showed that sense of place is formed gradually and hierarchically, starting with place identity, which then strengthens place attachment, and under certain conditions develops into place dependence. The form and intensity of social interaction between residents play a crucial role in this process, even if the residence is rented. The relationship between these three aspects, associated with communal agreement, subcultural homogeneity, and demographic factors, strengthens collective identity and the level of sense of place. The study shows that socioeconomic factors, such as occupation, social background, and family size, have a significant influence on the formation of sense of place. Thus, the ideal design of vertical housing needs to go beyond functional aspects and consider the social and emotional values of residents. This research expands the theoretical model of sense of place by integrating the formative aspects and their hierarchical levels, and contributes to the design of sustainable and inclusive vertical housing in Indonesia.
