Abstract

Surabaya merupakan kota multietnis dengan sejarah panjang serta warisan budaya yang beragam, termasuk situs-situs permakaman yang hingga kini masih kurang mendapat perhatian dalam agenda pelestarian. Dari sekian banyak entitas cagar budaya yang tercatat, hanya sebagian kecil yang terdokumentasi secara formal dan menyeluruh. Situs permakaman menjadi salah satu kategori paling rentan terhadap kerusakan dan desakralisasi akibat minimnya dokumentasi visual yang representatif dan pemahaman
publik yang rendah terhadap nilai historis maupun arsitekturalnya. Menanggapi hal tersebut, perancangan buku visual dokumentasi ini hadir sebagai upaya pelestarian non
material yang sekaligus berfungsi sebagai media edukatif, dengan fokus pada tujuh situs permakaman terpilih berdasarkan kejelasan narasi, keterpeliharaan elemen, dan
ketersediaan data visual.
Perancangan ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan preserve by documentation sebagai landasan utama. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi lapangan untuk mencatat kondisi eksisting situs, identifikasi elemen
arsitektural, dan dokumentasi fotografis. Wawancara mendalam dengan pihak TACB turut dilakukan untuk menggali informasi kuratorial terkait proses penetapan dan pelestarian situs. Data yang dihimpun dianalisis dan diklasifikasikan berdasarkan aspek morfologis, stilistik, dan historis, lalu dikembangkan menjadi media visual berupa ilustrasi, denah, dan visual pendukung yang disusun kronologis sesuai linimasa situs.
Hasil perancangan berupa buku visual yang menyajikan dokumentasi lengkap dari tujuh situs permakaman cagar budaya Surabaya. Buku ini dirancang untuk menjangkau pembaca umum, akademisi, hingga komunitas pelestari budaya, dengan penekanan pada visualisasi elemen simbolik dan arsitektural. Selain sebagai media dokumentasi, buku ini diharapkan menjadi sarana edukasi dan komunikasi publik yang mampu meningkatkan kesadaran akan pentingnya pelestarian situs permakaman serta memperkuat identitas historis Surabaya di tengah dinamika perkembangan kota.

Surabaya is a multiethnic city with a long history and diverse cultural heritage, including cemetery sites that have received little attention in preservation efforts. Among the many recorded cultural heritage entities, only a small portion has been formally and thoroughly documented. Cemeteries are among the most vulnerable categories, prone to damage and desecration due to the lack of representative visual documentation and limited public understanding of their historical and architectural value. In response to this issue, the design of this visual documentation book serves as a form of intangible preservation as well as an
educational medium, focusing on seven selected cemetery sites based on narrative clarity, preservation of elements, and availability of visual data.
This project adopts a descriptive qualitative method with a preserve-by-documentation approach as its primary framework. Data were collected through field observations to record
the existing conditions of the sites, identify architectural elements, and conduct photographic documentation. In-depth interviews with the Cultural Heritage Expert Team (TACB) were also conducted to explore curatorial insights related to site designation and preservation processes.
The collected data were analyzed and classified based on morphological, stylistic, and historical aspects, then developed into visual media including illustrations, site plans, and supporting visuals arranged chronologically according to the timeline of each site.
The final design outcome is a visual book presenting comprehensive documentation of seven cultural heritage cemetery sites in Surabaya. This book is intended for a broad audience, including the general public, academics, and cultural preservation communities, with an emphasis on visualizing symbolic and architectural elements. Beyond documentation, this book is expected to serve as an educational and public communication tool that raises awareness of the importance of cemetery site preservation and reinforces Surabaya’s historical identity amid urban development dynamics.
