Abstract

Technological advancements have transformed the way humans interact with their physical environment, giving rise to dynamic and interactive spaces. The concept of digital placemaking enables public spaces to evolve into meaningful places through creative, technology-based interventions. Meanwhile, the idea of soft cities emphasizes the integration of physical and virtual environments to create flexible, interactive spaces, enriched by a phenomenological approach that focuses on sensory experience.
This design integrates the concepts of placemaking and soft cities through a concept-based framework, using the Kebon Rojo Post Office building in Surabaya as a case study. The building was selected due to its long history and diverse functions, which align with the principles of a soft city. The design process involved literature reviews, mind mapping, user interviews, and design simulations.
The resulting design proposes a three-zone spatial scheme: orientation, assimilation, and reintegration. Each zone is designed to be flexible for various public activities and responsive through interactive technological elements, such as sensory installations, augmented reality, and multimedia historical visualizations. The design also preserves the authenticity of the heritage elements in accordance with conservation regulations, ensuring that the building’s historical value is maintained while enriching the visitor experience.
This design is intended to serve as a reference for the development of public spaces in other heritage areas, prioritizing flexibility, responsiveness, and meaningful spatial engagement in the context of modern urban life.
