Abstract

This research focuses on selecting an effective maintenance strategy for 42 centrifugal pump units in the furnace process. These pumps have various functions ranging from cooling, granulation, circulation, and booster systems. Maintenance strategies are needed because these centrifugal pumps are directly related to the productivity and safety of the plant. If problems occur, it can directly impact production targets and even pose potential work accidents such as over-expansion of the kiln shell which can cause molten metal cutout. The best maintenance strategy policy must be selected for the 42 centrifugal pumps and because of the large number, the centrifugal pumps are grouped into several homogeneous groups based on asset criticality. The Criticality Index criteria of the Asset Criticality are assessed based on several factors that influence the productivity and safety of plant operations. Next, the weight of each criterion is calculated. After obtaining the centrifugal pump grouping, the maintenance strategy decision-making method is applied through a multicriteria decision-making approach, namely the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to select the best maintenance strategy alternative which is a combination of several maintenance strategies. The next stage is a sensitivity analysis to see the level of sensitivity of the ranking to changes in decision-maker preferences. The results of the study indicate that high priority pumps (Group 1) make damage the main criterion for selecting a maintenance strategy and use a relatively more modern and computerized maintenance category, even though the costs tend to be more expensive (Maintenance Strategy Alternative 1). For pumps included in medium priority (Group 2) require predictive or preventive maintenance by considering the costs and risks of damage that are relatively balanced and do not require high technology (Maintenance Strategy Alternative 2). Meanwhile, for pumps included in low priority (Group 3) can consider the Feasibility criteria with a Run to Failure maintenance strategy (Maintenance Strategy Alternative 3).
