Abstract

The understanding that architecture cannot be separated from space forms the foundation of phenomenological theory. Phenomenology addresses this issue by proposing the idea of whether a church can foster a sense of connection by cultivating spiritual experiences through its architectural design. By adopting the concept of Insideness and Outsideness from phenomenological theory, the design links theory with a relevant issue: the growing detachment of younger generations from the church, which is also highlighted in the Lumen Fidei encyclical.

A space becomes a place when it is interpreted through personal or collective experience. One of the reasons for the declining interest of the younger generation in the church is the lack of a sense of connection with it. This is related to the absence of profound spiritual experiences during worship in church.

This gives rise to the hypothesis of imagining the church as a journey of sacrifice, acting as a catalyst for spiritual experience among its users. The church design concept is supported by an atmospheric approach and narrative method. The atmospheric criteria are based on five elements: form, circulation, material, light, and public–private relationships. The narrative method is applied in the spatial configuration, where the narrative of the Stations of the Cross is divided into four major parts: acceptance, compassion, humiliation, and death. Each part is represented through spaces that embody the corresponding narrative by shaping the atmospheres using the five criteria mentioned above.

The spatial configuration creates a sequential flow: a tunnel representing acceptance, an atrium representing compassion, a church representing humiliation, and a landscape representing death. These elements collectively create a profound atmospheres, inviting emotional engagement and reinforcing spiritual connection with the church space. The design is not merely a place of worship, but a spiritual journey intended to rekindle the congregation’s relationship with the church.
