Abstract

In Asset Management Companies (AMCs), institutional values such as resilience, trustworthiness, and prestige often contradict the psychological tendencies that arise within their work culture, such as burnout-proneness, fear, and overconfidence. Yet both sides of this paradox are valid: the values are essential to the company’s identity, while the psychological conditions of the employees are real consequences of how that identity is pursued. These contradictions are not errors to be eliminated, but conditions to be confronted. This raises a central question: how can architecture acknowledge and express these tensions without forcing a resolution? This design explores that question through the lens of paradoxical architecture within the Concept-based Framework, using space to hold awareness and actualization in deliberate tension. The design process begins by identifying psychological contradictions in AMC workplaces through literature on behavioral finance and organizational values. The paradoxes between AMC employees’ psychological tendencies and the company’s organizational values, such as burnout vs. resilience, fear vs. trust, and overconfidence vs. prestige, are then developed into formal and spatial design concepts using paradoxical architecture, which preserves tension rather than resolving it. Through deliberate use of form, sequence, and material, the design gives formal expression to these opposing forces, creating a workplace that reflects both emotional realities and institutional values. A narrow, compressed corridor opens into a sky garden to represent emotional pressure and release, fragmented rear massing contrasts with a monolithic front to evoke fear and trust, while reflective and perforated materials articulate overconfidence and prestige values. The resulting office design is conceived as a psychological landscape, an architectural reflection of contradiction, inviting awareness, reflection, and a more honest engagement with the culture of high-performance workplaces.

Dalam Asset Management Company (AMC), nilai-nilai institusional seperti resilience, trustworthiness, dan prestige sering kali bertentangan dengan kecenderungan psikologis yang muncul dalam budaya kerja mereka, seperti burnout-proneness, fear, dan overconfidence. Namun, kedua sisi paradoks ini sama-sama sah: nilai-nilai tersebut penting bagi identitas perusahaan, sementara kondisi psikologis karyawan merupakan konsekuensi nyata dari bagaimana identitas itu diwujudkan. Kontradiksi ini bukanlah kesalahan yang harus dihapus, melainkan kondisi yang perlu dihadapi. Hal ini menimbulkan pertanyaan utama: bagaimana arsitektur dapat mengakui dan mengekspresikan ketegangan ini tanpa memaksakan penyelesaian? Desain ini mengeksplorasi pertanyaan tersebut melalui pendekatan arsitektur paradoksal dalam kerangka Concept-based Framework, dengan menghadirkan ketegangan antara awareness dan actualization secara sengaja di dalam ruang.
Proses perancangan dimulai dengan mengidentifikasi kontradiksi psikologis di lingkungan kerja AMC melalui kajian literatur tentang behavioral finance dan nilai-nilai organisasi. Paradoks antara kecenderungan psikologis karyawan dan nilai-nilai organisasi perusahaan, seperti burnout vs. resilience, fear vs. trust, dan overconfidence vs. prestige, kemudian dikembangkan menjadi konsep desain formal dan spasial menggunakan pendekatan arsitektur paradoksal yang mempertahankan ketegangan alih-alih menyelesaikannya. Melalui komposisi bentuk, penataan ruang, dan pemilihan material, desain formal dan spasial arsitektur dihadirkan sebagai kontradiksi pengalaman, untuk menciptakan tempat kerja yang merefleksikan realitas emosional sekaligus nilai-nilai institusional. Sebuah koridor sempit dan tertekan membuka ke sky garden untuk merepresentasikan tekanan emosional dan pelepasan; massa bangunan yang terfragmentasi di bagian belakang dikontraskan dengan fasad depan yang monolitik untuk mengekspresikan fear dan trust; sementara material reflektif dan berperforasi digunakan untuk mengartikulasikan nilai overconfidence dan prestige. Desain kantor yang dihasilkan dipahami sebagai sebuah lanskap psikologis, refleksi arsitektur atas kontradiksi, yang mengundang awareness, refleksi, dan keterlibatan yang lebih jujur terhadap budaya kerja berintensitas tinggi.
