Abstract

The rise in global surface temperatures due to carbon emissions has become a critical environmental concern. The shipping sector is projected to contribute up to 17% of global CO₂ emissions by 2050 without proper intervention. To address this, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) as a mandatory metric for vessels above 5000 GT, with increasingly stringent thresholds each year to support the Paris Agreement’s goal of reducing emissions by 50% by 2050. This study presents the development of a web-based application designed to monitor and optimize vessel CII values in real time using data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS). The system incorporates mathematical models aligned with strategies from the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP), offering 12 energy efficiency recommendations categorized into hull design, power and propulsion systems, alternative fuels, and alternative energy sources. The application also provides cost estimates and simulates the impact of each recommendation on the vessel's CII rating. To ensure flexibility and system reliability, the application adopts a microservice architecture, allowing integration with the existing system without disrupting its functionality. Communication between the legacy system and the new application is established via RESTful APIs. This modular approach enables independent deployment and maintenance, reducing risk during updates or failures. The solution aims to support ship operators and management in making data-driven decisions for energy efficiency and to contribute to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction efforts in the maritime sector.
