Abstract

The Defensible Space theory introduces by Oscar Newman (1973) underpins a design approach aimed at creating secure environments by organizing spaces that facilitate control and surveillance by their occupants. In an era of rapid urbanization, challenges such as high population density, limited land availability, and the need for a sense of safety demand the application of design strategies that enhance the quality of life in densely populated residential areas. The territoriality and behavioral-spatial approach supports the implimentation of Defensible Space theory by emphasizing the relationship between individuals or groups and the spaces they control, own, or manage to meet their daily needs. This design approach explores strategies for applying Defensible Space principles to create vertical housing that fosters a sense of security and positive social interaction among residents. The expected outcome is the development of safe, comfortable, and balanced living environments capable of addressing security and social well-being amidst rapid urbanization.
