Abstract

Architecture holds significant potential to respond to temporary moments, such as the mudik phenomenon during Idulfitri. This study is grounded in soundscape theory, which emphasizes how auditory experiences can shape spatial perception. By understanding a moment as a point in time that is both temporary and meaningful, the architectural approach is directed toward emphasizing this experience through the creation of a dynamic soundscape. This study aims to design an adaptive architecture that can respond to temporary needs during the mudik period by intentionally and contextually crafting auditory experiences. The method employed refers to Plowright’s concept-based framework, which emphasizes theory-driven conceptual exploration. The design proposal is applied to the context of terminal bayangan—informal transit spaces that emerge at strategic locations near official terminals. The design focuses on the manipulation of sound elements to create spatial atmospheres that are both meaningful and moment-specific. This study presents a final design that demonstrates how architecture can enhance the experience of temporary moments through an adaptive approach and the integration of a dynamic soundscape.
