Abstract

Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) is one of the herbal plants capable of producing secondary metabolites composed of essential oil components. One method of increasing secondary metabolite production is through stress induction. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) concentration on the growthof peppermint plants and the structure of glandular trichomes in peppermint plants. The research stages included transferring peppermint plants from soil medium to hydroponic medium containing PEG 6000 at concentrations of 0 g/L (control), 2.5 g/L and 7.5 g/L for 5 days, data collection on parameters including the density and diameter of abaxial glandular trichomes, leaf area, fresh and dry weight, and measurement of chlorophyll and carotenoid content in the leaves. The results of the study showed that the application of PEG 6000 at concentrations of 2.5 g/L and 7.5 g/L for 5 days did not significantly affect the observed parameters, namely density and diameter of glandular trichomes, leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight, and chlorophyll and carotenoid pigment content. However, there was a tendency toward increased trichome diameter in the PEG 2.5 g/L treatment compared to the control. Analysis was conducted using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc tests using Duncan's Multiple Range Test if significant values were found at a 95% confidence level.
