Abstract

Ammonia, with its zero-carbon combustion potential, methanol, which is easy to handle and compatible with existing infrastructure, and LNG, which is known for its high energy content and low emissions, are all evaluated using a variety of performance indicators. The findings show that, while LNG presently leads in fuel efficiency due to its high energy density, ammonia, and methanol provide considerable long-term benefits, particularly given their minimal environmental effect and future scalability. LPG, known for its clean combustion properties, also presents a viable alternative with lower CO2 and particulate emissions. This study provides vital data for ship operators and regulators to make informed decisions about the use of alternative fuels in the maritime industry.
The purpose of the study is to provide a comprehensive comparison of ammonia, methanol, LPG, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as alternative fuels for maritime shipping, with a focus on fuel economy.
