Abstract

Virtual YouTuber (vtuber) is a trending online subculture where content creators use a fictional digital avatar to represent themselves. One of the most popular forms of content within its community are Boyfriend Experience (BFE) and Girlfriend Experience (GFE), where a vtuber roleplays as the audience’s significant other. Although clearly stated that these roleplays do not reflect the real-life relations between the vtuber and them, many fans consume these contents in a personal and emotional level, resulting in what is called a parasocial relationship. While many cases have shown the negative impact of a parasocial relationship taken too far, the importance of preserving the privacy of vtubers and setting the boundaries are still generally taken very lightly. As a solution to this problem, an educative game media in the form of a visual novel is developed in order to teach fans how to set the correct amount of boundaries within a parasocial with vtubers. The game design integrates the self-management counselling technique, where gameplays allow players to take parasocial decisions by their own will, while showing what the consequences of those choices might be. The research process uses literature studies, depth interview with corporate vtubers and a psychologist, as well as an online questionnaire for vtuber fans. The design output results in a four-chaptered visual novel, with sixteen illustrations and four different endings that reflects the life and consequences of a vtuber fan with parasocial attachments. It is hoped that the game can show the dangers of parasocial relationships for both newer and more experienced vtuber fans, as well as help understand the needed limits for these type of relationship.
