Abstract

Indonesia has significant renewable energy potential, yet its utilization remains low. In the digital era, social media plays a crucial role in influencing individual decisions, including the adoption of renewable energy. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the intention of young people in Surabaya to use renewable energy, as part of efforts to support a sustainable energy transition. The research adopts the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), elaborated through its core components and extended with an external variable, Social media information (SMI). Data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed both digitally and offline to respondents aged 16–30 who reside in Surabaya and have been active social media users within the past six months. A total of 450 valid responses were analyzed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach with the assistance of SmartPLS 4. The results indicate that the extended TPB model significantly explains behavioral intention, with Perceived behavioral control emerging as the dominant predictor, influenced by Self-efficacy, infrastructure readiness, and financial capability. Attitude also plays a significant role, especially when renewable energy is perceived as beneficial and compatible with one's lifestyle. Conversely, Perceived Ease of Use negatively affects Attitude, reflecting a critical evaluation of technologies perceived as overly simplified. Meanwhile, Subjective norm does not significantly influence intention. In the extended model, the SMI variable shows both direct and indirect effects on intention through Attitude and Perceived behavioral control. Overall, the Intention to Use Renewable Energy among young people is shaped not only by internal factors such as Attitude and perceived control, but also significantly influenced by information encountered through social media.
