Abstract

The selection of an appropriate main engine configuration plays a critical role in optimizing the operational performance and economic efficiency of conventional diesel-powered oil tankers. This study aims to evaluate and compare single and dual engine configurations through technical and economic analyses, using the MT. Senipah as the research subject. The methodology begins with calculating the ship’s coefficients, resistance, and power requirements to determine engine specifications aligned with the vessel’s characteristics and operational profile. Subsequently, the study analyzes operational performance parameters such as acceleration, redundancy, and reliability for both engine configurations, including responses to engine failure. The technical analysis is supplemented by an economic evaluation of operational expenditure (OPEX), encompassing fuel consumption, routine and emergency maintenance costs, spare parts requirements, and crew-related expenses. External factors such as insurance and international emission regulations are also analyzed as part of the research considerations. This comparative analysis reveals trade-off between long-term operational costs and system reliability levels. The single engine configuration demonstrates advantages in fuel efficiency and system simplicity but is vulnerable to operational risks due to insufficient backup power. Meanwhile, the dual engine configuration offers higher redundancy and operational flexibility but requires greater resources for maintenance costs, engine room, and operational complexity. These findings are intended to serve as a strategic guide for understanding critical factors in selecting main engine configurations. The study also contributes to the development of more sustainable and cost-effective maritime operational practices, aligning with the modern maritime industry’s demand for a balance between efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
