Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of operational safety in subsea pipeline installation using the S-Lay method in the Northwest Java Sea, with the aim of identifying the optimal configuration of stinger angle and roller height so that the maximum stress in the overbend and sagbend areas does not exceed the safe limit according to the DNV OS-F101 standard. Using numerical simulation with Orcaflex software, an analysis was carried out on three stinger angle configurations (13.3°; 8.84°; 4.48°), each tested with ten variations of roller height based on actual environmental data, technical characteristics of the pipeline, and barge operational parameters. The research results recommend the optimal configuration of a stinger angle of 8.84° with the 6th roller height variation, as it produced the most stable and safe Von Misses Stress, which is 365.906 MPa, far below the allowable stress limit (391.5 MPa), thus effectively minimizing the risk of overstress and ensuring efficiency and safety in subsea pipeline installation. This study provides a significant contribution to understanding effective design principles for stinger angle and roller height configuration in the context of S-lay pipeline installation, paving the way for technological advancement in the offshore and oil and gas industry.
