Abstract

Climate change and the lack of cold storage technology pose major challenges for traditional Indonesian fishermen in preserving the quality of their catch. The use of ice blocks as a conventional cooling method has many limitations, including low efficiency, limited cooling duration, and high logistical demands. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a thermoelectric Peltier-based cooling system applied to a 170-liter cooling box through modeling and simulation using MATLAB and CFD software ANSYS Fluent. The research process includes designing the geometry model of the cooling box and Peltier unit, conducting an initial simulation in MATLAB Simscape to assess thermoelectric performance, and analyzing temperature distribution through steady-state thermal and fluid flow simulations using ANSYS. The results show that the cold side of the Peltier can reach 274.85 K or 1.7 °C at 15 A current, while the hot side reaches 323.8 K or 50.65 °C. The temperature distribution inside the cooling box indicates effective cooling performance at 90-minute period, especially when half of the internal volume is filled with water, with half of its volume filled with water showed temperatures around 283.66 K or 10.512°C and for distribution full load is 285.13 K or 11.98 °C. This study concludes that the MATLAB and Ansys coupled simulation are capable to predict the Peltier’s thermal electric performance and it shows that Peltier based cooling system a Peltier-based cooling system can serve as an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient appropriate technology solution for cooling of small fish cold storage onboard traditional fishing boat.
