Abstract

Studi ini mengevaluasi kelayakan teknis dan manfaat kinerja dari konversi sistem ropulsi kapal tunda MV Charis 05 dengan bollard pull 12 ton dari konfigurasi diesel-mekanik konvensional menjadi sistem diesel-elektrik. Melalui simulasi komputasi yang mencakup penggunaan MAXSURF untuk analisis hambatan hidrodinamik dan MATLAB/Simulink untuk pencocokan motor-propeller, rancangan retrofit dikembangkan menggunakan dua motor listrik WEG 450 kW, empat generator diesel 400 kW, Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), dan gearbox HCD 800. Sistem yang diusulkan ini mempertahankan kemampuan operasional asli kapal, dengan menghasilkan bollard pull yang setara (12,3 ton) dan kecepatan jelajah 10 knot, serta mampu mengurangi konsumsi bahan bakar tahunan sebesar 44% (dari 783.480 liter menjadi 437.210 liter). Peningkatan efisiensi ini dicapai melalui optimalisasi faktor beban generator pada berbagai kondisi operasi: 86% saat pelayaran, 78,2% saat manuver, dan 63,3% saat operasi towing. Konfigurasi diesel-elektrik ini juga memberikan fleksibilitas operasional yang lebih tinggi melalui manajemen daya yang cerdas, memungkinkan pengoperasian satu generator saja pada kondisi beban rendah. Dari sisi lingkungan, sistem ini memberikan pengurangan signifikan pada emisi CO₂, NOₓ, dan SO₂, mendukung kepatuhan terhadap target keberlanjutan IMO. Konversi ini tidak memerlukan modifikasi struktural yang besar, sehingga menunjukkan bahwa sistem propulsi diesel-elektrik tidak hanya layak secara teknis, tetapi juga lebih ramah lingkungan untuk operasi kapal tunda pesisir. Penelitian selanjutnya disarankan untuk fokus pada analisis kelayakan ekonomi serta uji implementasi praktis guna memvalidasi temuan berbasis simulasi ini.

This study evaluates the technical feasibility and performance benefits of converting the propulsion system of the 12-tonne bollard pull tugboat MV Charis 05 from conventional diesel-mechanical to diesel-electric configuration. Through computational simulations including MAXSURF for hydrodynamic resistance analysis and MATLAB/Simulink for motor-propeller matching, a retrofit design was developed using two 450 kW WEG electric motors, four 400 kW diesel generators, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and HCD 800 gearboxes. The proposed system maintains the vessel's original operational capabilities, delivering equivalent bollard pull (12.3 tonnes) and service speed (10 knots) while achieving a 44% reduction in annual fuel consumption (from 783,480 liters to 437,210 liters). This improvement results from optimized generator load factors across operational profiles: 86% during sailing, 78.2% during maneuvering, and 63.3% during towing operations. The diesel-electric configuration offers enhanced operational flexibility through intelligent power management, allowing single-generator operation during low-load conditions. Environmental benefits include significant reductions in CO₂, NOₓ, and SO₂ emissions, supporting compliance with IMO sustainability targets. The conversion requires minimal structural modifications, demonstrating diesel-electric propulsion as both technically viable and environmentally advantageous for coastal tugboat operations. Future research should focus on economic feasibility analysis and practical implementation trials to validate these simulation-based findings.
