Abstract

This thesis focuses on the design of a Monohull passenger ferry utilizing fiberglass material, specifically tailored for operations in the Batam Island sea area, to address the growing demand for efficient, durable, and environmentally sustainable maritime transportation. Batam, a strategically located city with close proximity to Singapore and the highest GDP growth in the Riau Islands Province, serves as a critical area of study due to its economic significance and rapid development. The route between Batam Island and Karimun Island, spanning approximately 50 kilometers (27 nautical miles), The total number of passenger crossings from Karimun to Batam in 2024 is 895,955 people and is predominantly utilized by residents originating from Karimun who reside in Batam. This trend is largely driven by Batam's status as an industrial hub and its rapid urbanization over the past decade, which has created numerous employment opportunities. The primary objective of this research is to identify the need for a ferry service that operates at higher speeds while maintaining cost-effective ticket prices, thereby enhancing connectivity and accessibility for commuters. By employing advanced design software and adhering to international maritime standards, the proposed ferry design aims to optimize passenger capacity, fuel efficiency, and safety. The study highlights the viability of fiberglass as a primary material for small to medium-sized passenger vessels, emphasizing its lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective properties. The findings of this research contribute to the advancement of marine engineering and provide a practical solution for improving transportation infrastructure in archipelagic regions such as Batam, ultimately supporting economic growth and regional connectivity.
