Abstract

This study explores the ratio of classroom window aperture as a controller of indoor environmental quality in terms of noise and ventilation by considering students' preferences as classroom users. The characteristics of this research are related to the transmission of environmental noise, especially aircraft noise and air conditioning in schools around Juanda International Airport, Surabaya. The subject of this research is environmental architecture in the context of acoustics and ventilation with the object of architectural research, namely the classroom window. This study uses a post-positivist paradigm by applying a combined strategy: a two-phase design, which consists of experimental research in the first phase and correlational research in the second phase. The researcher used an experimental method to measure the noise and ventilation intensity of the three window opening ratios. Furthermore, a correlational strategy was used to examine the relationship between window opening ratios and student preferences. The data was collected using a questionnaire survey with a self-administered questionnaire system for students in grade 5 at SDN Banjarkemuning, Sidoarjo. The answers to the questions on the questionnaire will formulate student preferences based on an assessment of the perception of the condition of the classroom environment and physical and psychological responses. The results of student assessments show that the ratio of 1/2 window openings is the student's preference in controlling airflow and noise. Even though the average noise is 71 dB(A), the peak of sound intensity is up to 108 dB and the average wind speed in the classroom is 0.2 m/s with a reduction of up to 71% of environmental wind speed. Furthermore, the correlational test of student assessment results showed a positive relationship between window opening ratios and student preferences, although it was not significant. Integrating experimental data, physical assessment, psychological responses, and correlational tests is the formulation of functional theory for school buildings around Juanda International Airport, especially windows function that maximize natural ventilation without considering airborne sound. Functional theory with building science parameters in ventilation and acoustics combined with Environmental Behavior Study (EBS) is expected to develop academic and practical knowledge about the architecture of school buildings near the airport.
