Abstract

Gresik Town Square was originally a field that was used by local residents for various activities. However, in 2017, the Gresik Town Square was converted into an Islamic Center. There are many pros and cons in society, so there are many rejections. This refusal is based on the position of the Gresik Town Square as a cultural heritage and the conditions around the Square are not only based on Islamic culture. This is marked by the existence of the Pentecostal Church and Kim Hin Kiong Temple near the Alun-Alun. Where this phenomenon inadvertently experienced the phenomenon of placelessness which was conveyed by Edward Relph (1976) in Seamon, David and Sowers, Jacob (2008). Placelessness describes the elimination of special places and the creation of standardized landscapes resulting from insensitivity to the importance of a place. The existence of Alun-Alun Gresik, which is an Islamic Center, can slowly erase special places, such as the Pentecostal Church and Kim Hin Kiong Temple which are also thick with cultural traditions. Based on this problem, the multicultural condition of the Old City of Gresik is the basis for restoring Gresik Square by respecting other cultures. By paying attention to the surrounding community, it is hoped that Gresik Square can provide meaning of place for the surrounding community and restore the significance of Gresik Old Town. Using participatory design approach, this project is trying to involve participant‘s contributions in seeing this issue and giving aspirations together about the design of Gresik Town Square which is more multiculture in collaborative way. The process of collecting opinion and collaborative works are done by workshop or interview and the use of technologies because the limit of distance while living in pandemic COVID-19 era. The concept of this design provides a lot of familiarity for the surrounding community through the use of elements that are identical to culture as a depiction of the multicultural concept. Then this concept is applied to the use of shelter, color, street furniture and vegetation. In addition, the multifunctional concept is also applied as a consequence of the activities that are intended to be accommodated in the design.
