Abstract
Cooling Water Systems atau proses pendinginan menggunakan air laut pada suatu sistem industri telah banyak dilakukan. Penggunaan air laut sebagai pendingin tersebut didasarkan pada keamanan, kemudahan, dan ketersediaannya yang melimpah. Akan tetapi, Penggunaan air laut dapat menimbulkan masalah baru berupa pembentukan kerak (scaling) pada pipa sistem pendingin, seperti penyumbatan pipa oleh kerak CaCO3 dan korosi. Penggunaan inhibitor berbahan kromat dan logam berbahaya (heavy metal) lainnya banyak digunakan pada sistem pendingin di industri. Akan tetapi, penggunaan inhibitor berbahan logam berat bersifat racun (toxic) terhadap lingkungan. Pada penelitian ini digunakan inhibitor poliakrilamida anionik yang ramah lingkungan untuk menginhibisi laju korosi dan pembentukan kerak pada permukaan baja SS400. Pengaruh variasi konsentrasi larutan inhibitor poliakrilamida anionik sebesar 0 ppm, 20 ppm, 200 ppm, dan 1.000 ppm dilakukan pada perendaman baja SS-400 selama 3 hari dengan temperatur 80 oC. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jika laju korosi dengan variasi 0 ppm, 20 ppm, 200 ppm, dan 1.000 ppm memberikan laju korosi berturut-turut sebesar 3,9289 mpy, 3,8282 mpy, 3,4253 mpy, dan 1,8134 mpy dengan efisiensi tertinggi sebesar 53,85%. Sedangkan kerak yang terbentuk merupakan kerak halit (NaCl) dengan ukuran partikel halit rata-rata pada 0 ppm dan 1.000 ppm berturut-turut sebesar 8,978 μm dan 3,848 μm.=================================================================================================================================
Cooling Water Systems using seawater in an industrial system has been widely used. The use of sea water as a liquid of cooling systems is based on safety, convenience, affordable prices, and abundant quantities. However, the use of seawater can create new problems, as forming of scale in the cooling pipes which can cause other problems, such as corrosion. Generally, the use of inhibitors made from chromate and other hazardous metals is widely used in industrial cooling systems. However, the use of inhibitors from heavy metals will be detrimental to the environment, especially dangerous for aquatic life and animals. One of the inhibitor candidates replacing metal-based inhibitors is anionic polyacrylamide. The use of anionic polyacrylamide as an inhibitor was carried out to determine the effect of anionic polyacrylamide on the corrosion rate and to determine the type of scale. The effect of anionic polyacrylamide concentration of 0 ppm, 20 ppm, 200 ppm, and 1.000 ppm was studied on immersing SS-400 steel in seawater for 3 days at 80 oC and forming scale type by heating at 80 oC for 8 hours. The results showed that the corrosion rate of 0 ppm, 20 ppm, 200 ppm, and 1,000 ppm variations has the value of 3,9289 mpy, 3,8282 mpy, 3,4253 mpy, and 1,8134 mpy, respectively, and the highest inhibition efficiency of the inhibitors is 53,85%. While the type of scale in this research is a halite scale (NaCl). The particle size of the halite of 0 ppm and 1.000 ppm variations is 8,978 μm and 3,848 μm, respectively.
