Abstract

Austenitic stainless steel is a material that has high corrosion resistance. The use of this material continues to develop until its application is not only obtained through the rolling process, but can also be produced from the overlay welding process which is usually carried out for equipment maintenance purposes. This difference in manufacturing process will result in differences in material quality including corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. In this study, the quality of corrosion resistance and mechanical properties between SS 316 resulting from overlay welding and SS 316 resulting from rolling were compared. SCC testing was carried out by varying the concentration of MgC12 solution and the distance between the legs of the U-bend specimen. A comparison was also made of the occurrence of general corrosion by immersing the material in H2S04 solution. For mechanical property testing, hardness testing was carried out using the Rockwell C method and tensile testing. From the experiments that have been carried out, it can be seen that SS 316 resulting from overlay welding has better resistance to corrosion and general corrosion than SS 316 resulting from rolling. In addition, it can also be seen that SS 316 resulting from overlay welding has lower tensile strength, elongation, and hardness values compared to SS 316 resulting from rolling
