Abstract

Imitation motorcycle sprockets are synonymous with low prices and low quality due to the low hardness of the sprocket material. However, there are many ways to increase hardness, one of which is the Flame Hardening process. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out the Flame Hardening process specifically on the surface of the sprocket. The flame hardening process is carried out on motorcycle sprocket specimens that have a carbon content of 0.4%. The Flame Hardening process is carried out at three different distance levels measured from the tip of the neutral flame to the workpiece, namely 9mm, 5mm, and 2mm. The Flame Hardening process uses oxy-acetylene welding with oil as the cooling medium. After the flame process is complete, hardness and metallography tests are carried out. The hardness test uses a Rockwell HR 150 A machine. The test results are analyzed to compare with the original sprocket. The results of the study show that the influence of the distance variable can be known with the hardness before the flame 72.6 HRB and after the flame with a distance of 9mm = 81.875 HRB, 5mm = 83.525 HRB and 2mm = 83.775 HRB. and can be taken data from the original sprocket test results with an average hardness of 40.125 HRC. The maximum hardness in the Flame Hardening process occurs at a distance of 2mm of 83.775 HRB, if compared to the hardness with the original sprocket which is 40.125 HRC, then the original sprocket is still harder than the imitation one
