Abstract

The Hull Vane® can reduce wave generation and ship motion in waves. However, previous studies have obtained results that contradict the existing theory were using a Hull Vane® results in an increase in the value of the ship's resistance. Based on the hypothesis, this is caused by the lifting force that is too large given by the Hull Vane® so that the ship experiences bow trim so that Hull Vane variations are made based on a 2.5% reduction in the lift force value on the ship's displacement. The variations tested included Hull Vane with a lift force value of 15.42% against displacement (AR = 8.5), Hull Vane with a lift force value of 15.42% against displacement (AR = 22.9) and Hull Vane with a lift force value of 15.42% against displacement (AR = 28.94). From the simulation results, it was found that the use of a straight Hull Vane in every variation of Hull Vane size on the test vessel was not effective because it added to the value of the ship's resistance. This is due to the effect of the lift force value by the straight Hull Vane at the stern of the ship so that the bow of the ship is more submerged than the ship without the Hull Vane. This causes the value of the wetted surface area (WSA) of the ship and the value of hydrodynamic pressure to increase compared to ships without a Hull Vane so that the value of the ship's resistance also increases. In addition, it was also found that the increase in the AR value (reduction of chord magnitude) on the Hull Vane effectively reduced the obstacles, including the speed of 11 knots (Fn = 0.34), 17 knots (Fn = 0.53), 20 knots (Fn = 0.62) and 26 knots (Fn = 0.8). The most significant reduction in drag occurred at a speed of 20 knots with a decrease of AR Hull Vane resistance = 8.5 with AR Hull Vane = 22.9 by 19% and a reduction in AR Hull Vane resistance = 22.9 with AR Hull Vane = 28.94 by 29%.
