Abstract

The handling of textile waste becomes very complicated and requires several steps until the waste is safe to be released into the aquatic environment because the types and dyeing materials used in the textile industry vary greatly, and methylene blue is one of them. Various textile waste management techniques have been developed, such as adsorption, coagulation, and flocculation methods. But this method considered less effective because the adsorbed textile dye is still accumulated in the adsorbent. In the other words it olny moves the dye from the liquid phase to the solid phase, not decomposing complex compunds so it will cause new problems. In recent years, many studies have focused on photocatalysis for the degradation of organic water pollutants using semiconductor materials. This study studied the effect of substrate set-up and water discharge on reactors on photocatalysis degradation of methylene blue pollutants using TiO2 as a photocatalyst. Photodegradation is carried out in the reactor "Calma" equipped with an ultraviolet-C (UV-C) bulb. The results showed a decrease in solution concentration by 6.08 ppm with a degradation percentage of 53.64% during the 24-hour treatment. The laying of substrates with a sheet shape in series perpendicular to ultraviolet lamps using spray coating method is known to be more effective when compared to substrates that are rolled up and only placed inside the reactor without being arranged. In addition, the discharge setting of 35 ml/s in the reactor also affects the degree of photodegradation of the methylene blue solution.
