Abstract

Deadwood is a tree or all parts of a dead woody tree. Deadwood has many important role in forest ecosystems including as a source of nutrients, substrate, habitat, carbon storage and geomorphology where dead wood can slow soil erosion. Meanwhile ForestGEO issued guidelines for dead wood census protocols with various recording parameters. The purpose of this study was to determine the condition of dead wood in the Sumber Pawon Forest Area based on the dead wood protocol by ForestGEO. The method used was the census protocol of dead wood by ForestGEO at 14 sampling points with a plot size of 20x20 m. Then a qualitative descriptive data analysis was carried out on deadwood where there were two criteria for deadwood, namely deadwood stands and fallen deadwoods. Based on the results of the analysis, it is known by the attributes of deadwood stands (snags) such as integrity, top diameter, volume, height, and level of damage to dead wood. Meanwhile, for fallen dead wood (logs) the attributes of integrity, position, volume, large and small tip diameters, and the level of damage to deadwood are obtained. The results showed that the abundance of deadwood in Sumber Pawon Forest in the period January to March 2022 was 24 individuals, where there were 10 deadwood stands and 14 fallen deadwoods. The characteristics of deadwood stands on average have a height of 5.75 m with the level of damage dominated by category 1 which is new deadwood aged 0-5 years with a special characterististic that the bark still covers the wood surface 80%, with an average volume of stand deadwood was 22.48 m3/ha while the characteristics of fallen deadwood are recorded with an average total length of 9.56 m dominated by the level of damage category 2 which was intact deadwood with a partially soft texture, and an average volume of 43.76 m3/ha. The trend of fallen dead woods in the Sumber Pawon Forest area is suspect to be influenced by internal and weather conditions, where the average of maximal wind speed that is recorded during 3 months of the study was 9,66 km/hour.
