Abstract

Waste is one of the environmental issues that requires serious attention from both the government and society. This problem is closely related to environmental sustainability and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, which emphasises ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns. Increasing consumption contributes to the growing amount of waste generated. East Java Province is one of the regions with the second-highest waste generation in Indonesia, showing a significant increase over the past four years. This study aims to model waste generation in East Java based on demographic, economic, and environmental factors, while considering spatial aspects across regencies and cities using the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) approach. Through this method, it is expected to obtain a model that not only explains the statistical influence of these factors but also reveals their varying impacts across regions. The analysis results show that the highest waste generation in East Java is in Surabaya City, while the lowest is in Blitar Regency. The GWR model with the Bisquare Fixed kernel performs better than multiple linear regression, with a model goodness-of-fit of 92.72%. The demographic factor represented by the population variable has a significant effect across all regencies and cities. The superiority of the GWR model indicates that the relationship between waste generation and demographic and economic factors is not uniform across all regions. This demonstrates the presence of spatial heterogeneity in the factors influencing waste generation in East Java
