Abstract

Indonesia’s export activities are dominated by the non-oil and gas sector, including the B2B furniture industry. In practice, furniture companies must carefully choose between direct and indirect export channels. However, export activities are often carried out without adequate analytical grounding, even though firms require profit-oriented decisions to achieve optimal profitability. This study presents a case study of CV XYZ, a furniture company serving markets in the United States, South Africa, and Spain, and develops a mathematical model based on Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to maximize profit and optimize a dual distribution channel strategy in the context of export operations. The model is designed to support distribution decision-making through quantitative analysis, enabling the company to maximize profit margins across both distribution channels. A quantitative model development approach is employed using RStudio and the GLPK solver to formulate a MILP model with a profit-maximization objective function. The model constraints represent the firm’s actual operational conditions, including production capacity, demand, and storage limitations. Quantitative parameters and assumptions are derived from one year of historical data covering costs, prices by product line, production capacity, and demand. The results show that the direct export channel contributes 52.99% more profit to the company than the indirect channel, due to differences in production cost components and selling prices. The model also identifies the products with the highest profit contributions. In addition, numerical experiments and sensitivity analyses on changes in selling prices, production capacity, demand, and combined changes in capacity and demand demonstrate their relationship with profit outcomes. These findings provide a basis for managerial decision making regarding the management of dual distribution channels in export-oriented furniture firms and offer a methodological reference for future research.
