Abstract

Air merupakan salah satu kebutuhan yang sangat penting dalam kehidupan dikarenakan kegunaannya dalam sehari-hari. Indonesia sebagai negara kepulauan menghadapi tantangan serius dalam penyediaan air bersih, terutama di wilayah pesisir yang rentan terhadap intrusi air laut dan keterbatasan infrastruktur. Namun air pada wilayah pesisir mengandung banyak kontaminan, salah satunya merupakan nilai TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). Penelitian ini bertujuan menurunkan kadar TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) dalam air payau dengan memanfaatkan membran berbasis kitosan yang dikombinasikan dengan metode elektro-adsorpsi. Sampel air diambil dari sumur warga, lalu dianalisis karakteristiknya. Membran akan disintesis dengan campuran kitosan, PVA, dan glutaraldehida (GA), kemudian diuji dengan sistem elektroda grafit menggunakan variasi tegangan listrik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan metode ini mampu menurunkan nilai TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meski kurang signifikan, dengan nilai efisiensi removal (%) terbesar pada variasi 12 V dengan jarak 4 cm. Tidak hanya itu, terdapat kenaikan pada nilai TDS dalam beberapa variasi, menunjukkan jika terdapat desorpsi ataupun kurang efisiennya medan listrik dalam metode elektro-adsorpsi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan elektroda dan membran kitosan mampu memicu terjadinya proses elektro-adsorpsi melalui pembentukan medan listrik dan interaksi ion terlarut dengan permukaan elektroda serta gugus fungsional aktif membran kitosan. Faktor kualitas dari elektroda yang dapat meluruh dalam pelaksanaan penelitian diperhitungkan dalam hasil. Analisis FTIR sendiri dapat mendukung fakta jika membran kitosan memiliki karakteristik yang optimal untuk proses adsorpsi. Didapatkannya pula nilai tegangan optimal untuk elektro-adsorpsi sebesar 12 Volt dan jarak optimal dari elektroda sebesar 4 cm.

Water is a vital necessity in life due to its daily use. Indonesia, as an archipelagic nation, faces serious challenges in providing clean water, particularly in coastal areas vulnerable to seawater intrusion and limited infrastructure. However, coastal water contains numerous contaminants, one of which is the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) value. This research aims to reduce TDS levels in brackish water by utilizing a chitosan-based membrane combined with an electro-adsorption method. Water samples were taken from community wells and their characteristics were analyzed. The membrane was synthesized from a mixture of chitosan, PVA, and glutaraldehyde (GA), then tested with a graphite electrode system using varying electrical voltages. The results showed that this method was able to reduce TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), although not significantly, with the highest removal efficiency (%) at 12 V at a distance of 4 cm. Furthermore, there was an increase in TDS values in several variations, indicating desorption or a lack of an efficient electric field in the electro-adsorption method. The results of the study indicate that the application of electrodes and chitosan membranes can trigger the electro-adsorption process through the formation of an electric field and the interaction of dissolved ions with the electrode surface and the active functional groups of the chitosan membrane. The quality factor of the electrode that can decay during the research is taken into account in the results. FTIR analysis itself can support the fact that the chitosan membrane has optimal characteristics for the adsorption process. The optimal voltage value for electro-adsorption was also obtained at 12 Volts and the optimal distance from the electrode was 4 cm.
