Abstract

Productivity among university students is often viewed as an indicator of success and readiness for the workforce. However, when the drive to continuously perform at a high level turns into a psychologically harmful compulsion, the phenomenon of toxic productivity emerges. This study aims to examine the relationship between Toxic Productivity, Academic Burnout, and Mental Health among students of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). The research employs a quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS), with primary data collected through a Likert-scale survey administered to ITS students from the 2022 cohort using a stratified sampling technique. The results indicate that most students are actively involved in non-academic activities, study for around 2–6 hour per day, and apply task prioritization strategies, reflecting relatively structured time management practices. Toxic Productivity is characterized by Working Excessive behavior, Working Compulsively tendencies, Perfectionism, and Neglect of Well-being. It has a positive effect on Academic Burnout and a negative effect on student Mental Health. Furthermore, Academic Burnout also contributes to the deterioration of Mental Health, indicating that Toxic Productivity affects students’ Mental Health both directly and indirectly through Academic Burnout. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining a balance between productivity demands and mental well-being in academic environments.
